Montreal 1976: Nadia's Perfect 10 Stuns the World

By James Wilson | July 18, 1976

Nadia Comaneci

In a performance that will be remembered for generations, 14-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic history during the team competition at the Montreal Games. The scoreboard, not designed to display such perfection, showed "1.00" when she achieved the unprecedented mark on the uneven bars.

"It was like watching poetry in motion," said ABC commentator Gordon Maddux. "She defied gravity and redefined what we thought was possible in gymnastics."

Comaneci would go on to earn six more perfect 10s during the Games, winning three gold medals and capturing the hearts of millions worldwide.
